felt flower workshop at the Pittenweem Arts Festival

During the Pittenweem Arts Festival we held two workshops based on our Felt Flower kit.

We were fully booked for both days and we were overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of our young crafters - aged between 7 and 11 years old and we also had two adults taking part too!

We didn't manage to take any photos during our Tuesday workshop but we did manage today.!

If you want you own Felt Flower kit you can buy one from us during the Pittenweem Arts Festival (we're at Venue 58 Ovenstone Artists).

You can see find some felt flower tutorials ideas here and if you want to know when our next workshop will be please sign up for our newsletter too!

felt flowers - classes at Pittenweem Arts Festival

Take one felt flower kit and stack the flower shapes in a pleasing way.

Remove the back large flower and place to one side (you'll be sewing the brooch bar on this one).

Using a pencil - lightly draw a circle in the middle of the top most small flower shape.

Using sharp scissors cut out the circle by piercing the middle of the circle and cutting around it- do not cut the edge of the flower.

Place this flower with the hole, on top of the flower stack - make sure any pencil lines are hidden (turn the flower with the hole over if you have to).

Using two strands of embroidery thread, back stitch around the edge of the circle - thus stitching together the 2 small flowers and the large flower.

Attach the brooch bar to the remaining large flower and hide the stitching with a circle (we've used blanket stitch).

Put your flowers together - making sure the brooch bar is facing out at the back and the holey flower is to the front (thus hiding all your ends!)

Carefully, use running stitch, sew the flowers together.  Do it UNDER the small flower and keep it neat on the back too...

And you're finished...

If you'd like to make your own felt flower you can buy our kits during the Pittenweem Arts Festival (Saturday 6th - 14th August) at Ovenstone Artist Studios.

We're having two classes during the Arts Festival inspired by our kit.  The classes are on Tuesday 9th August and Thursday 11th August, each class is from 10am-12pm and tickets cost £8.

We'll provide all the materials - felt, thread, brooch bars and buttons as well as a needle book and stitching guide to take away for more stitching adventures.  They'll be some felt flowers to inspire you and probably cake too...

It'll be a great opportunity to start a little sewing and learn some embroidery stitches or try something different.

We'll tailor the class to the attendees abilities (although we do recommend ages 8+).

You can book a place (limited to 6 for each class!) by calling the Arts Festival booking office 01333 313 903.

Sew through all the layers to make it nice and secure.

Add a french knot right in the middle.

felt flowers on a bag

Having finally acquired a new messenger style bag to carry my diary, notebooks, library books and other assorted items (deemed essential by my four year old) I felt it needed to be prettied up.

Cue felt flower kit in a new charcoal colour scheme...

laid out ready for stitching

all stitched and ready for a close up

The bag material was slightly tricky to stitch and I needed a sharp needle, but it didn't take long and its another great use for our felt flower kits.

(The aforementioned four year old wanted to add even more flowers but I managed to convince her it was pretty enough...)

This new colour scheme will be able at The Loft @ Ardross Farm 23rd and 24th of April.
