new shop sample - Love Note!

New shop sample in Love Note - knitted in Rowan Alpaca Classic.

Love Note, by Tin Can Knits, is knitted in the round from the top down.  The original pattern uses two strands of yarn held together - a 4ply and a laceweight.  Our version uses one strand of Alpaca Classic.

The pattern gives two lengths - both quite cropped!  But it's easy to add more length.  Because it is knitted top down you can try it on whilst you're making it - to get the length you want.

The neckline is also finished at the end... so if you'd rather it was lower and looser you can do that too.

The pattern is available on Ravelry and you can buy it in the shop through Ravelry in-store sales.

You can see other versions of Love Note here.https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/love-note/people

NEW book - Mason Dixon Knitting Field Guide

New in the shop - a field guide from Mason Dixon knitting - a masterclass with Kaffe Fassett using Rowan Felted Tweed!

The blurb... "Think of this Field Guide as a master class with Kaffe, a chance to play and learn, have fun, and surprise yourself. Although some of the designs may look complicated to you at first glance, they are all based on the basic stripe, either solid or stranded. And they all use the same yarn—our beloved Rowan Felted Tweed. Once you figure out your gauge and needle size, you’re set for multiple projects, and you will even have yarn left over from one project that you can then put to use in another."

Check out the patterns and explosion of colour on Ravelry.  Buy the book and yarn in the shop!

a 'new' alpaca hat

Another version of our free shop pattern.  This time using Rowan Alpaca Classic, a mix of cotton and alpaca.

Original version in Rico Luxury Alpaca

For the Rowan hat you need to hold two strands together.  Although I've done ours in one colour, you could use different colours to create a marled appearance.

And if you're looking for matching mitts, try our free Simple DK Mitts pattern.

Simple DK Mitts, easy to modify.  One ball of Rowan Alpaca Classic for one pair

Both patterns are available in the shop as well as the yarn of course.

And coming soon... a new shop sample... Love Note by Tin Can Knits in Rowan Alpaca Classic

Mohair Cowl - reboot

A quick and simple project using one ball of Rowan Kidsilk Haze.

Knitted on a circular needle this cowl is all knit stitch with some easy yarn overs for holes on purpose.

A good next project for a beginner (laceweight on thick 6mm needles can feel unwieldy) this makes a very lightweight fluffy cowl in luxury fibres (mohair and silk).

This is a free shop pattern, repurposed from Karen's Capelet design from ye olde days.

We've got a new yarn from Rowan this Autumn/Winter.

Alpaca Classic is made using a cotton net which is filled with superfine alpaca fibers.  It's a soft, light weight yarn and we've got 10 shades in the shop.

Patterns by Lisa Richardson, using Alpaca Classic, are included in the new Rowan magazine (Issue 64, in the shop!) but it's a versatile yarn that works well on different needle sizes for garments and accessories!

These new shades were created by Kaffe Fassett and there is also a pattern book, Kaffe's Colours, using these new bold shades and the existing Felted Tweed colour palette.

We've also got Rowan Loves... Felted Tweed and Kidsilk Haze back in stock.  Simple and stylish garments and accessories that show different combos of Felted Tweed and Kidsilk Haze... and... these garments can be knitted in the new Alpaca Classic too!

Crochet Along from Rowan

more details on Rowan website

Rowan's newest Crochet Along (CAL) features Felted Tweed DK.

The Crochet Along is released in 12 parts, with supporting videos and tips and tricks.

The end result is a blanket but you can take the individual parts and combine to make something else... a bag, a cushion, a scarf, or indeed stick them in a book as a sampler of stitches and techniques.

Rowan Felted Tweed is a gorgeous yarn and comes is a wide range of shades.

There are 12 shades used in the CAL:-

Bilberry 151, Peony 183, Ginger 154, Cumin 193, Rage 150, Watery 152, Barn Red 196, Stone 190, Carbon 159, Avocado 161, Boulder 195, Celadon 184

The ones in bold are the ones we stock!

The first part is released on 3rd August and then, depending on complexity (eek!), they are released weekly-ish until 16th November.

There is no 'sign up', no compulsion to finish and no need to use the colours suggested or even Felted Tweed!  But it is a great opportunity to develop your crochet skills, and if you want some accountability then share your progress with us!

If you already have a stash of Felted Tweed, please pop into the shop with your remnants and we can help you add to your stash.

Or if you want to start a new stash pile we have lots of shades in stock...

Remember you can use a different yarn, it's a great opportunity to experiment with different fibres, hooks and colours.

I'll be using Felted Tweed (it really does make a lovely crocheted fabric) and trying out as many of the stitches/squares as possible. I do not consider myself a crocheter, my tension is wonky, I'm never entirely sure which stitch to stick my hook into, and my edges do not stay straight...  but I'm giving it a go!

You can follow my progress on here, on Instagram and Facebook, I'll be using #rowancal on all my posts.

A tale of two affections...

two affections - Karen's Rialto Lace and Fiona's Rowan Summerlite

One of our most popular shop samples is Colour Affection by Veera Välimäki (pattern available to buy on Ravelry).  Originally knitted in 3 shades of Rialto Lace.

We love it so much - a versatile shape, gorgeous stripes and mindless knitting* that we've each made our own version.

Karen has made her Colour Affection in Rialto Lace,  Fiona in our new Rowan Summerlite 4ply Cotton.

Whilst Karen had the beautiful blocking qualities of a 100% merino laceweight, Fiona was alot more cautious not too over block the cotton (which has no memory - once stretched it ain't going back).

But this cotton is so soft... even after washing.  It drapes so well that we can forgive it's lack of elasticity.

Pattern available to buy online, yarn is in the shop and the scarves are around our necks!

Oh!  and we've just unpacked a brand new 4ply that would be lovely as a Colour Affection...  Juniper Moon Herriot Fine in 7 shades in the shop...  lush!

*yes we admit it, it often feels endless too...
